Lübeck Christmas Market, Germany, Get in the Christmas Spirit
It is the most wonderful time of the year. I love Christmas. I’ve loved Christmas since I was a little girl. The snow, decorations, light, father Christmas, carols, counting down to the 24th, the presents…. Everything was magical and wonderful and perfect. As an adult, I still love the season and everything that goes with it. I know that to many people it is a stressing time where they need to buy those presents, cook the dinner, and make sure that everything is perfect. Every family has their own traditions. One of mine became going to Christmas markets.
Lübeck Christmas Market.
The most beautiful and magical Christmas Market I’ve visited was the Lübeck Christmas Market. Step into a magical Christmas world in the heart of the Old Town. When you enter this old city center it is like stepping through a portal end entering another world. Lübeck has a medieval atmosphere with many sites of cultural and historical interest with impressive old brick Gothic architecture. It takes you straight back in time and makes it easy to play along with everything that is happening.
In December Christmas is in the air. You get the aroma of roasted almonds and chestnuts that will make your teeth ache to take a bite. The cinnamon and other delicious spices from freshly baked goods will lead the way to the shops like Hansel and Gretel to the gingerbread house. The distinct pine-smell from hundreds of trees located around the market sends promises of a jolly good time. Delicious Sausages and ridicules amounts of cheese can be found everywhere. And, of course, the hot spiced mulled wine that you can savor from early morning to late evening, finding your favorite flavor. Do you prefer the traditional red one with raisins and nuts? Spiced-up with rum or amaretto? The white mulled wine with elderflower? Apple or Orange flavor, or something completely different? So many choices, so many places to drink it.
You can find anything here your heart will desire, and all wrapped around in a magical Christmas-Spirit with a chill drift of clear winter air. Name one good reason not to make this a Christmas tradition?
The Lübeck Christmas Market has been around for hundreds of years documenting its origin back to 1648. It is located in Medieval surroundings which give the visitor a pretty good idea of what this market might have looked like 369 years ago. The old brick Gothic architecture still remains giving the city its medieval atmosphere. Stop by the Holsten Gate, the St. Mary’s Church, the town hall and many other buildings.
Stroll around the narrow and cobblestone alleyways and courtyards of Lübeck’s Old Town. Be overwhelmed by the smells and the experiences of all the things you can eat and drink. You must try three different hot spiced mulled wine a day. Munch on the variation of different Christmas bakes like a gingerbread-heart and a Must-Do is, of course, the Lübeck marzipan.
Though the stalls and owners do their best to keep the market looking traditional the today more than 400 merchants might have changed slightly in the passing years. Today the stalls on Markt and Breite Straße offer everything from Christmas decorations to gingerbread hearts. With a broad selection of unique toys for toddlers and children, many of them in old fashion tree, and countless authentic and old fashion ideas for gifts that can only be purchased here. I bought an old wooden handmade barrel filled with a home-brewed Weißbeer in one of the stalls and at least 20 other things for my loved ones and myself.
2 things you do not want to miss.
1. The Lübeck’s Fairy Tale Forest is a Must-Do and a personal favorite. It is a recreation of the tales of the Grimm Brothers containing 21 stalls dedicated to the different tales and 500 illuminated trees.
2. The Marzipan salon which tells the story of Marzipan and gives you plenty of options to buy goods for Christmas at home.
Lübeck's Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and always worth a visit, but I would especially recommend it for Christmas. Germans just know how to make Christmas absolutely wonderful. Drop by St. Peter’s Church and climb the towers for a beautiful view over the city.
